DeSantis urges residents to evacuate as Hurricane Helene nears landfall

(The Center Square) – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday morning said time is still available for those in the path of Hurricane Helene in the Big Bend to evacuate, but that time is drawing to a close. 

He also urged those in Tallahassee, which has not been hit by a hurricane of this magnitude, to take the storm threat seriously despite a slightly eastward jog in the storm's predicted path.

DeSantis signs two bills designed to bolster Florida homes against hurricanes

(The Center Square) — Gov. Ron DeSantis signed two new bills Wednesday intended to strengthen Florida homes against hurricanes and other severe weather events.

DeSantis signed Senate Bill 7028, which will add another $200 million in funding for the My Safe Florida Home Program which allows homes to be assessed after major storm events and assists in improving resilience in structures.

Despite hurricane landfall, Florida gas prices decrease going into Labor Day

(The Center Square) — Despite being hit by Category 3 Hurricane Idalia, gas prices in Florida have decreased by five cents going into the Labor Day weekend.

The average gas price in Florida was $3.69 per gallon of regular according to the American Automobile Association, down from $3.75 last week but four cents more than last month. The national average is $3.83.
