Protecting yourself on/in the Weeki Wachee River

The Memorial Day holiday will soon be here, and it is one of the busiest times of the year for boaters.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office and the Southwest Florida Water Management District have partnered to share tips for users of boats, kayaks and other watercraft.

These important reminders will not only keep you safe but help reduce ecological impacts on the Weeki Wachee River. Watch this video to learn more.

Free educational materials available

Have you ordered your free educational materials yet? The District has a variety of free items you can order. Businesses and organizations serving the Weeki Wachee River area can request a variety of items, including posters, lanyards, tips sheets, coasters and recreational guides. Plus, educators can order springs-related educational items for students. Just email Michele.Sager@WaterMatters.org.

Walking in the water

Don't trample vegetation or kick up silt is one of the seven river tips to remember. Vegetation that is trampled could be destroyed and in some cases may not return without restoration efforts. Also, kicking up silt can re-suspend sediments affecting water clarity. Being mindful of how we recreate can help eliminate these problems.
